WHO WE ARE

WHO IS THE EMERGENCY PATROL SEARCH AND RESCUE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM?

In 1976, CB radio clubs were the big attraction. One large group decided to help stranded motorists on highways and work with the OPP at accident scenes. We initially had bay stations monitoring communications with 150 members in the group and became the Emergency Patrol Search and Rescue Communications. The initial meeting was held in a Legion and continued for some time until approximately 1987 when the City of York asked for the team at a Slo-pitch baseball tournament. The idea from road patrols to assisting at community, charity and sporting events gave them an opportunity to survive on more donations and to provide better services to the community. In 1976 they also voted to be nonprofit team.

WHAT WE DO?

All our members are trained as Medical First Responders. The membership has grown and fallen over the years but the quality of training has improved from no first aid in 1976 to standard first aid in the 80's. In 2000, we became Medical First Responders. We have gone from using our own personal cars in the 70's to the early 90's when we picked up our first decommissioned ambulance. In 2010 we had a cube van type decommissioned ambulance. From using CB radios in the 70's to using vacuumed tube type car radios in the 80' and 90's to using hand held rented radios on a repeater to owning our own radios off a repeater we use numerous ways to communicate between members. We are dedicated volunteers who are giving up their time to various communities so everyone can enjoy a safe event.

WHERE HAVE WE BEEN?

Our services have been requested at Canada Day celebrations, Winterfest, Slo-pitch baseball tournaments, volleyball tournaments, car shows, car rallies, marathon races, ice hockey tournaments, wheelchair basketball tournaments, Asian Night Markets, Dragon Boat Race, Buskerfest, Woofstock, Air and Space Museum Open House, 70th Anniversary of Battle of Britain throughout Southern Ontario. We provide our services by donations and honourariums at these events.

WHY DO WE EXIST?

We found that there was a need for our volunteers to relieve the authorities (eg. EMTs, Fire and Police) at these events and to provide the service for a safe and happy community. To also show that there are dedicated and honorable people willing to give back to their communities.

HOW DO WE DO IT?

In our decommissioned ambulance, we carry AED, oxygen, backboards, chair stretcher and a Gurney, various sizes of C-collars and 2 full trauma bags. We are fully equipped with medical supplies at each event to be aware of any situation that arises. We do not transport patient to hospital but use the local EMS as requested. If the patient needs to be transferred by ambulance, a medical form is completed and copy given to the paramedics and EPSRC and organizer keep a copy of the form as well. This allows EPSRC to continue to provide their service at the event. We have never received any government grants and rely on donations & honorariums.
